When the Level 4 BEMS controls engineer apprenticeship standard was approved for delivery in February of 2020 it was the perfect opportunity for learnd to help develop new BMS engineers and invest in the future of the industry. By combining training with a real job role, aspiring engineers can get hands-on experience, learn key skills and gain an understanding of the industry directly from experienced BMS professionals.
“There was a newly launched apprenticeship qualification, the business was growing and looking to the future, the timing seemed perfect.” Dave explained.
The first apprentices that Dave helped register were existing learnd engineers who he felt would benefit from the formal training offered as part of the programme with apprenticeship provider Group Horizon before Lewis Taylor and Max Goodall were hired externally and Joe During was given the chance to move from his previous role in the ROC.
Whilst working in the ROC, I was exposed to communicating with various engineers who would be working on-site and helping engineers troubleshoot any issues they had on-site. I became fascinated with the engineering lifestyle of traveling to different sites and resolving problematic issues.
Being able to get stuck in to something practical was also a key part of the appeal for Lewis “The work it looked like I would be doing here at learnd in the BMS industry interested me the most because of it was a mixture of hands-on physical work as well as the IT side of things doing software which I have always enjoyed doing.”
Developing the skills for BMS career success
The training and the support from the service team have allowed the BMS apprentices to develop both their technical knowledge and their customer facing skills and to get involved with key projects, something that Max has been particularly pleased with. “I’m proud of the overall progression I’ve made at learnd. More specifically I’ve been involved in the rollout of our exciting new learnd app which I’m also very proud of.”
Dave is keen for this development to continue when the apprenticeship ends: “Once they graduate, they will become junior service engineers with all the responsibility and freedom that entails. when they have settled into their roles we will review and map out the next steps of their careers with PDP’s. Do they want some sales experience? Do they want some design and project experience?”
The opportunity to continue developing and progressing has Lewis optimistic for the future, highlighting the strength of the BMS apprenticeship as a first step in a successful engineering career
When I finish my apprenticeship I will be a fully qualified BMS engineer and I believe I could go to almost anywhere in the industry with these qualifications.
