Unlike other proptech startups, learnd took a conscious decision early on to acquire trusted building management systems businesses.

Why did we do this? Because most of the energy used in buildings is used to heat or cool and provide ventilation, and this is controlled by your building technology.

What we’re doing differently:

1. We can work with any technology, including your legacy building management system

Proptech startups in the past have tried to circumnavigate the building management system. It’s not sexy enough or they don’t have the engineering capabilities to tackle it. However, to ignore what runs the building is the biggest mistake and the reason why hundreds of proptech companies ultimately fail. If you don’t address the legacy system, you’re not controlling the building

2. If you need to make a change on Christmas Day, we’re there!

Callouts matter to us and our experienced engineers. There is no point optimising your building tech or capturing the data, without being able to make real-time changes to your buildings when you need them most. This is the only way to approach decarbonising the one million non-residential buildings in the UK, building by building, site by site

3. Technology at the right time

The timing of technological change in an industry that is traditional, with buildings that are mostly over thirty years old, must be right. Our role as your partner, is to ensure that the building tech ecosystem is optimised for today – and ready for tomorrow. The strength of working with learnd is that we understand the new building tech that will play a key role in the success of your buildings- and the continued relevance of old ones.

4. Connecting the tech (and the dots)

Incumbent technology can be improved by connecting to our platform, and this is where we create immediate value for our customers. Until the building tech ecosystem is ready, including development and optimisation of other critical parts, the technology revolution promised by some plug-and-play proptech is bound to be delayed, no matter how great its potential.

5. Working towards a low carbon future, at scale

We realised that if we wanted to challenge the status quo and help buildings become smarter, greener and better connected, we would need to do it from the inside. With the best will in the world, if you don’t have a forward-thinking partner like learnd managing your buildings, your real estate won’t change.

On top of this, you won’t be able to achieve the building outcomes that matter most to you: whether that’s reducing your emissions and making energy savings or flexing your spaces to support hybrid workers or better patient outcomes.
