As Head of Health, Safety & Compliance, Andrew is responsible for ensuring that everyone working for learnd works safely whether that’s on site or in the office.
Arriving at the office
I usually start work around 8:30. If I’m at the office I’ll start the day by doing some checks to make sure nothing’s broken and everything is as it should be. I’ll also let everyone know if there’s anything like a fire drill that they should be expecting.
I’m based out of the Stockport office but I do occasionally visit the other offices to make sure that everyone is aware of and following the right health and safety protocols.
If I’m working from home my first step is usually to check my emails and see if anything has come through since I was last online. I get messages from our engineers about any accidents or near misses so it’s important that I’m fully up to date.
Morning
With learnd continuing to grow quickly we’re always bringing new engineers on board so I work closely with Aimee McGovern and Rachael Gallimore from the Talent and Culture team to make sure that our new hires have everything they need to get started.
My number one priority is making sure our engineers go home safe at the end of the day so I spend most of my time making sure they have the right tools and training to do their jobs as safely as possible.
I spent 18 months on the road earlier in my career and I know that it can be a slog but making sure we do things right and that everything is reported correctly is always worth that extra effort.
Afternoon
As well as looking out for our site engineers it’s also important that we keep everyone in our offices and panel shops safe.
Sometimes that means me visiting the offices myself to do checks but I’m also lucky to have people like Tom Lauder (Service Manager), Jon Richardson (National Panel Manager), Michael Young (Panel Designer/Builder), Sam Heath (Head of Sales, Data Centres) and Andrew Johnston (Operation Manager) to help keep things ticking over at all of our sites and across our teams.
There are things like air conditioning PPM visits and testing water temperature for Legionella for the offices that they can support with and they can also help in situations where engineers based out of their offices are having issues.
End of Day
Once I’ve made sure there’s nothing urgent that needs resolving my day usually finishes between 5 and 6pm, depending on my priorities for that week and the workload which when you’re dealing with health and safety is normally pretty substantial!
Managing everything from company cars to health and safety and insurances for our business definitely takes a lot of work but we know that we can’t deliver for our customers without the right support for our people.
As someone who was with Aimteq before the acquisition by learnd it’s been incredible to see how quickly the business has grown and the way things have moved forwards, even with the challenges that come from having so many engineers to support and offices to maintain.
