learnd delivers remote capabilities for Boots, giving the customer complete control over their flagship Oxford retail store.

Supporting a leading retailer

Boots is one of the largest retailers in the UK and Ireland, both in terms of revenue and the number of shops. They have circa 3,000 shops across the United Kingdom and Ireland ranging from local pharmacies to large health and beauty shops.

They are investing heavily into refurbishing their stores so they can offer a better customer experience. Contemporary HVAC and lighting solutions allow them to change lighting schemes from a remote location and instantly change the look and feel of a store to reflect a new product or store promotion.

BMS system upgrade objectives

The Boots Estates team were looking for a store refresh to incorporate instant changes to wall wash lighting to enable marketing and promotions to be executed remotely at their flagship store in Oxford City Centre. Alongside their marketing objectives, the Estates team were also looking to improve their health and safety provision via remote logging of emergency lighting test execution and results logging.

Project challenges

The biggest challenge we faced on this project was store operation. The installation and commissioning of the project was completed out of hours, tested extensively then applied to the store once our engineers were happy with the operation.

The BMS system was upgraded at the same time as the DALI lighting project was being installed. One Tridium JACE was used for both the HVAC and lighting applications, improving the store environment and providing the Boots Estates team with the marketing and health and safety functions they were seeking.

Multiple systems integrated

For the primary top-end we utilised a Tridium JACE, which was ideal for integrating multiple different protocols such as, KNX, DALI, Pharos (DMX), BACnet and Modbus from multiple manufacturers, such as Siemens, Pharos, Toshiba and Carlo Cavazzi.
